New Family Members

I bought two Winter Normal hamsters yesterday from Pet Lovers Centre at Sunway Pyramid. I am over the moon!

Thanks pa for the approval and cash! My mom didn’t really want me to have hamsters because first, it takes a lot of responsibility and she obviously doesn’t think I am responsible enough, and secondly, she believes hamsters bring diseases.

I admit I don’t have a really good record of taking care of my own pets. I have two cute dogs and well, I haven’t spent enough time with them. “I don’t live with them. They are at the first house…” - this has always been my excuse for neglecting them. I feel bad. One of my resolutions for 2008 is to spend more time with my dogs. I just played with them last week. So I am happy. And less guilty now.

Back to the hamsters. I have always wanted to have hamsters. One of my friends wanted to give me her hamsters for free when her mom gave birth to a baby brother, but I didn’t get my mom’s approval…

But this time is for real. I went on the Internet and looked up tons of information on hamsters - types of hamsters, their eating habits, their health conditions, keeping them as pets, their behaviour, etc.

I discussed with my parents for quite some time. We talked about where we are going to place them, the things we need to buy, what if they have babies, and so on. At last, we decided to buy two. A male and a female. YAY!

When we got to the store, I wasn’t as happy as I thought I’d be. I kept thinking of the responsbility it takes to keep the two little hammies. The biggest fear was what if the female one gives birth to a bunch of little babies?

(We have had many dogs and we always try to keep the same gender. It’s cruel, but a litter of puppies is a lot of responsiblity and time.)

But as we were buying all the stuff for our new family members, I began to cheer up a little. Getting new pets is really an exciting thing!

Spent about RM200 on all the stuff. The things at the shop are extremely, unreasonably overpriced! Ughh! Hate it.

Shopping for my two hamsters…

^ (L-R) Wood chips for bedding; Cage that comes with a drip bottle, a feeding bowl, and wheel; Lavender-flavoured bath sand; Hamster food; Mineral stone corn to prevent overgrown teeth; Bath house for hamsters; Hamster ball; and My dad’s hand. :D

Bedding

^ Bedding. My dad helped me set up everything! Wonderful.

My two babies!

^ They are in there!

Peee!

^ They peed in the box…

Their new house…

^ Their new house. So comfortable…

Cute hammies!!!

^ The one under the wheel is female and her name is Cotton! The one sleeping in the corner is male and his name is Nugget! And by the way, they follow my last name.

We watched them closely the whole day yesterday. They are so tiny and playful.

Nugget is extremely active. He can never stay at one place for even a few seconds! He climbs, he runs, he wheels A LOT.

Cotton really loves climbing and playing in the sand house! While I am typing this, they are sleeping soundly. Hamsters are nocturnal. They rest during the day and are active during night time.

We can tell which is which by their colour and size. Cotton is grey. Nugget is greyish black. Nugget is also slightly bigger.

Can’t wait for them to wake up!

Again, thanks dad and mom!
